Sad loss

During the lockdown Girling RFC said farewell to a true brakeman, a brother in green and gold Alan (Batesy) Bates.
We were blessed and honoured to have such a legend grace our club lovingly over four decades, from being a front row player, who once he hung up his boots couldn’t leave the pitch on a Saturday and became our physio and first aider. A committee man for both Girling RFC and a Newport and District representative, to becoming Vice Chairman of Girling and later being recognised and achieving the highest honour of “life member”
Come the first home game of the season when your boys as you would affectionately call them grace the sports ground for their weekly eighty minutes battle and the ref’s decision doesn’t go our way, we will pause and think with a warm tingle in our hearts and a smile how we would long to hear “Come on you donkey”.
Thank you for your love and friendship AL
Love from all
Girling RFC
